Kimi Antonelli claimed a composed victory in a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, pushing his championship advantage out to 43 points. The Mercedes driver inherited clear air after teammate George Russell retired on Lap 30 with a power unit issue, ending a fierce early fight for the lead.
From lights out, the two Mercedes swapped positions multiple times in an intense opening stint, with a couple of contentious moments as each pressed for control. Russell’s sudden stoppage brought out a Virtual Safety Car and prompted most of the field to pit, with Antonelli resuming ahead of Max Verstappen.
From there, Antonelli was rarely troubled and managed the gaps to the flag, taking a fourth consecutive win by 10.7 seconds. The result underscored his momentum at the start of the campaign and his calm management of a race influenced by changing conditions.
Lewis Hamilton delivered Ferrari a strong second place after a late pass on Verstappen in the closing laps. Verstappen nevertheless secured third, his first podium of the season, to get Red Bull back among the rostrum places.
Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson took seventh, narrowly keeping Alpine’s Pierre Gasly at bay in eighth. Williams added more points through Carlos Sainz in ninth, while Haas’s Ollie Bearman claimed the final point in 10th.
Oscar Piastri missed out in 11th at the end of a bruising day for McLaren. The team’s call to start on intermediates backfired, forcing both cars into early switches to slicks that dropped them down the order.
The Audis of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto came home 12th and 13th, ahead of Haas’s Esteban Ocon, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas in 14th through 16th.
There was a heavy attrition count alongside Russell’s retirement. Lando Norris stopped with a gearbox issue after pitting two laps in from the lead to swap his intermediates for slicks, while Cadillac’s Sergio Perez was sidelined by a suspension failure. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso retired with a seat problem, and Williams’ Alex Albon was eliminated after contact with Piastri, an incident that earned Piastri a penalty.
Anticipation about rain loomed over race day, with showers intensifying as the start approached and temperatures dropping. Russell lined up on pole for the main event with Antonelli alongside, setting the stage for their headline duel before reliability swung the contest.
Round 6 takes Formula 1 to Monaco from June 5-7. Mercedes’ approach to intra-team management and reliability, Verstappen’s push after his first podium, and Ferrari’s race-day execution will headline the storylines to watch.
