Daniel Suarez won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the most emotional of circumstances, holding off a string of late restarts before rain made the race official and dedicating the victory to the late Kyle Busch.
Busch, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, died earlier in the week, and the longest race on the calendar became a stage for the garage's grief. For Suarez, who has spoken openly about how much Busch shaped his path into American racing, the win carried a weight far beyond the trophy.
"This one really means a lot," Suarez said through tears. "I've been saying for years that this is my favorite race of the year. I get to have my family here. It's been a very tough week. Kyle, he was special, man. This one is for Kyle. For Kyle, for Samantha, for Brexton, for Lennix, for all his family."
Suarez, the 2016 Xfinity Series champion, traced his career back to the opportunities Busch helped create. "If it wasn't for Kyle, I wasn't going to be an Xfinity champion," he said. "I wasn't going to have my shot in the Cup Series, and to be able to win this race for him is unbelievable."
The race itself hinged on a series of restarts as showers closed in on Charlotte, with rain offering Suarez the chance to make the result official before he could be challenged again. He defended hard each time the field bunched, twice fending off cars on fresher tyres.
"The car was fast," he said. "We were having some issues, but we knew all weekend that the car had plenty of speed. The team did an amazing job. It wasn't easy, we had a lot of issues throughout the race, but they put us in contention and we executed well."
Asked whether the victory meant more than his Xfinity title, Suarez was careful not to diminish either. "Every win is special," he said. "The championship was very, very special, but this one has a special flavor because of Kyle. This one is for him."
There were embraces in victory lane, including a hug from seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson, as a sport in mourning paused to mark both a milestone win and the loss of one of its greatest competitors. For Suarez, the tribute was the whole point. "To pass somebody who is so revered, talented and appreciated," he said, before returning, again and again, to the same line: this one was for Kyle.
