Gordon Shedden held off a relentless Ash Sutton to win the opening race of the British Touring Car Championship round at Snetterton, with Tom Ingram producing the drive of the day to charge from 21st on the grid to a remarkable third.
Pole-sitter Shedden made a clean getaway in his Toyota, leading away from Tom Rowbottom and the Mercedes pair as the field streamed down towards the first corner. But the early calm gave way to a thrilling fight for the lead once Sutton arrived on the scene.
The reigning champion used his car's straight-line speed to draw alongside the Toyota repeatedly, the two trading the lead in a wheel-to-wheel exchange that ran the length of the lap. Sutton dived around the outside under braking to snatch the lead, only for Shedden to fire straight back on the inside into the hairpin. Crucially, the pair were playing very different strategic games: Shedden had hybrid boost in hand, while Sutton was forced to deploy his single permitted lap of boost simply to keep the Toyota honest.
That allocation could only stretch so far. Once Sutton's boost was spent, Shedden's superior energy reserves told, and the Toyota edged clear to take the chequered flag and a first win of the campaign for the team — a result that follows teammate Aron Taylor-Smith's earlier victory at Brands Hatch.
The other star of the show was Ingram. Armed with maximum boost from his lowly grid position, the former champion sliced through the order from 21st, and once into the podium places he made it count. A beautifully judged move through the Esses dispatched Adam Morgan and lifted him into third, a position he then defended firmly to the flag as Sutton came under late pressure of his own. Daryl DeLeon completed the top four.
For Shedden and Toyota, the win is an important early statement before the championship's summer break, with Oulton Park the final stop before the series resumes at Knockhill. For Sutton, second place after such a committed defence keeps him in the thick of the title picture, while Ingram's recovery drive served as a reminder of just how quickly the BTCC's success-ballast and boost rules can turn a difficult grid slot into a podium.
