Sergio Pérez, the 34-year-old Mexican driver, has officially signed a two-year extension with Red Bull Racing, ensuring his position with the team through the end of the 2026 Formula One season. This announcement was made on June 4, 2024, amid a backdrop of strong early-season performances that accelerated contract discussions.
“I am delighted to be staying here to continue our journey together and contribute to this team’s great history for two more years,” Pérez remarked, highlighting his enthusiasm for the ongoing challenge with the illustrious team. He has been part of Red Bull since 2021, boasting five race victories and playing a pivotal role in their constructors’ championship triumphs over the past two years.
In the 2023 season, Pérez notably finished as the runner-up in the drivers’ championship behind his teammate, Max Verstappen, a testament to his capabilities on the track. “Being part of the team is an immense challenge, and one I love,” he added, hinting at the commitment and passion that drives his performance.
Christian Horner, the team principal at Red Bull, underscored the importance of stability within the team's driver lineup. “Continuity and stability are important for the team,” he asserted, recognizing the successful partnership between Pérez and Verstappen. Their collaboration yielded a historic one-two finish for Red Bull in the drivers' championship last year, reaffirming the importance of this duo.
Choosing to retain Pérez was a strategic decision, as Red Bull had the option to explore a wide array of free-agent drivers due to their dominance in F1. However, Horner emphasized that sticking with the experienced Mexican driver was the right approach. “Checo and Max are a successful and robust partnership,” he mentioned, shedding light on the chemistry that exists between the two drivers.
Despite the occasional scrutiny regarding his performance—particularly when compared to Verstappen’s record-breaking 19 wins in the 2023 season—Pérez has worked on refining his approach. At the start of the 2024 season, he adopted a less experimental setup with his car, resulting in a more cohesive driving experience. “I felt ‘a lot more together’ with the car,” Pérez noted after achieving several podium finishes early this season, including three second-place results in the first four races.
The decision to keep Pérez was aided by his popularity within the team and his largely amicable rapport with Verstappen. Horner’s confidence in Pérez is evident, despite the driver encountering hurdles in the most recent races, including a challenging eighth place at Imola.
As they look towards the upcoming seasons, the Red Bull team is keen on capitalizing on the stability offered by Pérez's contract, especially with a new cycle of F1 car design rules set to begin in 2026. The expectation is that this continuity will foster further development and success, not just for Pérez, but for Red Bull Racing as a whole.
Pérez's journey with Red Bull Racing exemplifies resilience and adaptability, qualities essential in the high-octane world of Formula One. As his partnership with Verstappen solidifies and the team ramp up efforts for the future, fans can anticipate more thrilling performances from the duo on the track.
