Sergio Perez and Red Bull Racing have reached a mutual agreement to part ways at the end of the 2024 Formula 1 season, marking the conclusion of a four-year relationship.
Earlier in the season, Perez had extended his contract with the team, securing his place until 2026 after his most successful year in 2023, where he finished second to his teammate, Max Verstappen. However, Perez’s performance saw a significant decline after signing the deal, resulting in just nine points across the last eight Grand Prix weekends in 2024.
As a result, he ended the season in eighth place in the drivers’ championship, with Red Bull unable to defend their constructors’ championship title, finishing third behind McLaren and Ferrari. Despite the challenges, Perez remained optimistic about his future with the team until discussions led to a decision to part ways.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to race with such an amazing team,” said Perez. “Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience and I'll always cherish the successes we achieved together. We broke records, reached remarkable milestones, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way.”
In his parting message, Perez expressed gratitude to the entire Red Bull team, including management, engineers, and fans. “A special thank you to the fans around the world, and especially to the Mexican fans for your unwavering support every day. We’ll meet again soon. And remember… never give up,” he added.
Throughout his tenure, Perez scored a total of 152 points in 2024, in stark contrast to Verstappen’s impressive 437. Reflecting on Perez’s contributions, Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, acknowledged the driver’s impact.
“I would like to thank Checo for all he has done for Oracle Red Bull Racing over the past four seasons,” Horner remarked. “From the moment he joined in 2021 he proved himself to be an extraordinary team player, helping us to two constructors’ titles and to our first one-two finish in the drivers’ championship.”
Horner highlighted Perez’s achievements, noting, “His five wins, all on street circuits, were also a spectacular mark of his determination to always push to the limit.” Although Perez will not race for Red Bull in 2025, Horner assured that he will remain a beloved figure within the organization.
During his time with Red Bull, Perez secured five victories, including a notable win in Monaco, and significantly contributed to the team’s constructors’ championships in 2022 and 2023.
As for Perez’s future, the Mexican driver is currently not slated to be on the grid next season, leaving uncertainty regarding his career plans, including a potential return in 2026. Meanwhile, Red Bull is expected to announce further details regarding their full lineup for 2025 in the near future, with Liam Lawson being the frontrunner for the seat.
“Thank you, Checo,” Horner concluded, reflecting on Perez’s unique contributions to the team’s history, which will be remembered fondly by fans and teammates alike.
As the team transitions from Perez, the focus will shift to his potential successors, with Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda in contention, setting the stage for an intriguing 2025 season ahead.
