Sergio Perez remains hopeful about his future with Red Bull Racing, even as he grapples with a challenging 2024 season. The Mexican driver faced another setback during the recent Las Vegas Grand Prix, exiting in Q1 for the sixth time this year, and finishing the race in 10th place.
After the race, Perez emphasized his determination to improve, stating, "I think we are closing to turning things around" as he prepares for the upcoming races. He acknowledged the difficulties faced in Las Vegas but believes that improvements are on the horizon.
"Probably in Vegas we didn’t have the pace that we had in Sao Paulo, but I think there are some promising signs that things are coming. We were not so competitive in Vegas in terms of team order, but I believe that here should be a good track for us," said Perez, looking ahead to the penultimate event in Qatar.
Reflecting on his season, Perez recalled his initial success, noting, "It’s been one of my best starts to the year, with four races consecutively on the podium – things were looking great." However, he acknowledged a downturn following their return to Europe. "As soon as we came back to Europe, I think our season took a U-turn. Other teams improved and found a lot of performance, on our side we got a bit lost with the car."
The driver expressed frustration over the inconsistencies the team has faced. "There were a lot of weekends where things were not coming in... we ended up losing a lot of points, and the season turned out to be quite a lot more difficult."
Despite the challenges, Perez remains optimistic. "But I think it’s how it is in Formula 1, sometimes things don’t go your way. We’re still here and optimistic we can turn things around as a team, especially for next year," he reiterated, signaling a focus on future improvement.
As speculation swirls regarding his future, particularly given his recent struggles, Perez reiterated the support of his team. "I think, at the end of the day, the team has all the information, there is so much I can say here. There’s a reason why we extended my contract during the year, and the team has everything [they need to know]."
He elaborated further, indicating the depth of the team's understanding of their performance issues. "We exactly know where we are in terms of performance, in terms of issues, difficulties that we’ve had. We are a team and we know exactly it’s a process, and we’re working on it together."
With two races left in the season, the prospect of improvement looms large. Perez remains committed to collaborating with his team to overcome the challenges they've encountered. "I think we are understanding and we are working hard to make sure that we can fix [the issues]," he asserted, demonstrating his resolve.
As the Formula 1 season nears its conclusion, Perez's outlook offers a glimmer of hope for both himself and Red Bull Racing. With his contract in hand, he is poised to push through adversity and aims for a resurgence in the final races.
Looking beyond 2024, both Perez and the Red Bull team seem committed to returning to a competitive edge, ensuring fans remain engaged with the unfolding narrative of performance and perseverance in Formula 1.
