Alex Palou turned a chaotic afternoon on the streets of Detroit into another statement victory, surviving heavy tyre wear, repeated mistakes and a string of cautions to win the 2026 Detroit Grand Prix — the 23rd IndyCar win of his career and his fourth of the season.
The Chip Ganassi driver had already underlined his form by qualifying on pole for the third race in a row in 2026, and although he had failed to convert the previous two, he refused to let this one slip. Leading from the front in his No. 10 Honda, Palou locked up tyres, ran wide and briefly dropped behind Kyle Kirkwood and Scott McLaughlin on the opening stint, but a well-timed caution and a sharp strategy call from his team put him back in control.
"It feels like the first time," Palou said after climbing from the car. "Honestly, it was a tough one. Very tough one. But the team did an incredible job once again with the strategy. The pit stops were incredible."
He pinpointed track position as the key on a circuit where overtaking is treacherous and clean air is everything. "Just track position — being able to be up front was key," he explained, admitting he had struggled to match Kirkwood and Will Power for tyre temperature on the restarts.
Those restarts defined the closing laps. Kirkwood, the defending Detroit winner, hounded Palou to within two seconds but could never line up a move, while the gap back to third-placed Graham Rahal stretched out behind. The McLaren pair of Pato O'Ward and Christian Lundgaard ran in formation further back, and Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenquist climbed into the top six.
Drama was never far away on the tight downtown layout. Scott McLaughlin's race ended brutally with around 10 laps remaining, the Penske driver limping to pit lane with a damaged rear toe link after contact with Will Power — an incident that left the two drivers, in the commentary box's words, with plenty to discuss afterwards.
The day was even worse for Alexander Rossi. After clouting the wall while warming his tyres earlier in the session, Rossi later ran into the back of Romain Grosjean and pitched him into the barriers, triggering another caution and an inevitable penalty. Christian Rasmussen's miserable May continued too, the Ed Carpenter Racing driver crashing out after the team had seen all three of its cars retire from the Indianapolis 500.
Through all of it, Palou kept his composure, nursing a flat-spotted left-front and a blistered set of soft tyres to the chequered flag. It was his third street-course win of a season that is fast turning into another championship procession, and the 23rd victory of a career that keeps climbing IndyCar's all-time lists.
"Still, another win feels incredible, and I can't wait for the next one," Palou said. "It really was tough. You really had to fight for this one."
