A four-figure Grand Prix tally is rare air in Formula 1, and McLaren are about to join it. The team will run a one-off celebratory livery at the Monaco Grand Prix to mark what it is calling its 1,000th race start, becoming only the second constructor after Ferrari to reach the landmark. The only wrinkle is that the maths does not entirely agree.
McLaren unveiled the tribute design along with a special race suit, wrapping the car in a black and papaya scheme that carries the number 1,000 on the sidepod, the date of the race and a little extra geometric detailing on the bodywork. It is understated rather than flamboyant, letting the milestone itself do the talking.
The catch lies in the difference between entries and starts. McLaren have now amassed 1,003 race entries, comfortably past the round number being celebrated. But the count of races they have actually got under way is smaller, dented by two separate double did-not-starts, one earlier this season and another back in 2005. Subtract those and the team head to Monaco on 998 starts.
By that stricter measure, the race around the principality is McLaren's 999th Grand Prix start, with the true 1,000th falling at the next round instead.
It is exactly the sort of detail to set a fanbase debating. Most historical records, and the sport's own communications, lean on entries when counting a team's appearances, which is why Monaco has been chosen as the moment to celebrate. Those who insist on counting only races that actually began will point out the festivities are arriving a weekend early.
Whichever side of the argument you fall on, the achievement is monumental. From Bruce McLaren's earliest entries in the 1960s through title-winning eras, fallow rebuilding spells and a recent resurgence to the sharp end of the field, four figures' worth of Grands Prix is a milestone almost no team will ever reach.
And Monaco, with its history, glamour and punishing barriers, is the perfect backdrop for the celebration no matter what figure the timing screens insist upon. A team with a stellar record on these streets will hope the commemorative colours are matched by a result worthy of the moment, leaving the only post-race debate to be about the order of finish rather than the accounting.
