Lando Norris has officially secured his long-term future in Formula One with McLaren, signing a multi-year contract that extends beyond his previous deal, initially set to expire at the close of 2025.

Speculation about Norris’ future had been rampant, particularly as rumors linked him to Red Bull as a potential replacement for Sergio Perez, whose contract is up at the end of the current season. However, Norris has made a definitive choice to stay with McLaren as the racing landscape shifts.

When asked about his decision to sign a new deal well ahead of the expiration of his current contract, Norris expressed a desire to eliminate uncertainty. "It's not something I want to worry about over the next few years," he stated. He further elaborated, "There's always been these discussions going on about our future, and I think it's a very good time, especially when it'll be coming to a couple of years when things start to get a bit more crazy with everyone else's contracts."

Norris noted the importance of focusing on the upcoming years as new regulations loom in 2026, stating, "It's not something I or the team want to be thinking of, or focusing on, or spending any time on in such an important couple of years. Yeah, simply because I can, I'm comfortable, I'm happy with where I am, the team are happy with me, so it's an easy decision."

Although the specific length of the new contract has not been disclosed, similar to Charles Leclerc's recent extension with Ferrari, McLaren’s Chief Executive Zak Brown commented on the lack of details, saying, "Because it's our business. Sometimes you discuss it, sometimes you don't."

During a media briefing, Norris acknowledged there had been preliminary discussions with Red Bull, but emphasized the normalcy of such interactions in Formula One. "Everyone speaks to everyone, every driver speaks to every team," he explained. He mentioned, "It's just what can one team offer you and what can another team offer you and things like that."

Norris explained that while discussions are common, they rarely progress, stating, "Nothing ever progresses more than that basically, we shut down quite quickly."

He also described how internal conversations with McLaren's team principal Andrea Stella and Zak Brown helped clarify his future. This shows a proactive effort to quell rumors regarding his potential moves: "We do want to put some of these rumors to bed because it's not a good thing that the team keeps seeing day in, day out, so that's why we've come to a decision so early on, and so quickly."

Norris joined McLaren in 2019, racing for the team in 104 Grands Prix by the end of last season. While he has yet to secure a race victory, a significant performance boost in 2023 has led to seven podiums, outperforming all except reigning champion Max Verstappen from the Austrian Grand Prix onwards. This upward trajectory played a critical role in his contract extension decision.

Reflecting on the progress made by the team, he expressed his growing belief in McLaren's future potential. "In the back of my head every now and then, there was the question of 'are we improving as much as we should?" he admitted. "But with how we turned things around [in 2023]... that’s a big thing that swings me in the direction of McLaren."

Norris indicated that results were paramount in his decision-making process: "It is also results led -- if we didn't score podiums and we had it as bad as what we did in 2022, there are going to be even more questions of whether I..."

In summary, Lando Norris has solidified his commitment to McLaren at a pivotal moment for both himself and the team. As they gear up for major changes in the sport, Norris aims to be part of McLaren’s resurgence, highlighting his confidence in their ongoing improvements and future prospects.
