Lando Norris has officially secured his future with McLaren Racing, as the team announced on January 26 that he has signed a multiyear contract extension. This agreement comes as McLaren seeks to reinforce their lineup for the long term, having initially signed Norris to a four-year deal that was set to expire at the end of 2025.
“I’m just happy to be staying with the people that I’ve grown up with, who have helped me develop as a driver,” said Norris, reflecting on his time with McLaren. The 24-year-old, who has spent six years with the team, emphasized his closeness with the organization, stating, “McLaren’s felt like home since day one.”
Norris had an impressive season in 2023, culminating in a sixth-place finish in the FIA Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with a total of 205 points. His performance was marked by six second-place finishes, including a notable result at the British Grand Prix. “I feel confident, I think, as a team with the people I have around me with everyone here at McLaren. We’ve got what it takes. Everything’s in place,” he added, showing considerable assurance in his team's capabilities.
The commitment of Norris is not only a personal victory but also a strategic move for McLaren. “I’m delighted that we’re continuing our relationship with Lando for multiple years to come,” expressed Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing. Over the course of six years, Norris has demonstrated exceptional dedication and desire to elevate McLaren's position within the racing hierarchy.
Brown acknowledged Norris’s role in the team's resurgence, stating, “Last season we saw the fundamental role Lando played with the impressive turnaround in results, and I’m looking forward to continuing this push forward together with lots more podiums.” This optimism sets a promising tone as McLaren prepares for the upcoming season.
In September 2023, McLaren additionally extended the contract of their other driver, Oscar Piastri, further solidifying their competitive roster ahead of the new season. The Formula 1 calendar is set to kick off on March 2 with the highly anticipated Bahrain Grand Prix, where both Norris and Piastri will aim to contribute to McLaren's objectives.
As the 2024 F1 season approaches, McLaren's dual-contract extensions emphasize a clear strategy aimed at reclaiming their status among the top teams in the sport. With Norris’s re-signing, the pressure will be on him and Piastri to deliver results, building on the team's recent progress and aspirations for championship contention. The commitment from both drivers brings a renewed sense of energy and focus to McLaren as they prepare for a challenging and exciting year ahead.
