The NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship battle could shift dramatically this weekend as the series heads to the streets of Long Beach for the Acura Grand Prix.
Andretti Global's Kyle Kirkwood holds a razor-thin two-point advantage over Chip Ganassi Racing's Alex Palou atop the standings after four rounds. With 14 races remaining, the early season has already established clear storylines about each driver's strengths.
Kirkwood has emerged as the series' premier street course specialist since joining Andretti Global. He has claimed six victories in his three-plus seasons with the organization, with five of those wins coming on street circuits.
The 25-year-old has been particularly dominant at Long Beach, winning two of the past three races from pole position, including last year's victory. He also captured the checkered flag on street courses in Nashville in 2023, Detroit in 2025, and Arlington earlier this season.
While Palou has only three street circuit victories to his name, one came at St. Petersburg this season where he won for the second consecutive year. At Long Beach specifically, he finished second to Kirkwood last year and boasts five straight top-five finishes on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile circuit.
The Spaniard has shown remarkable consistency at Long Beach in a Ganassi car, posting finishes of fourth, third, fifth, third, and second in succession.
Arrow McLaren's Christian Lundgaard sits third in the championship standings and could factor into the weekend's outcome after finishing third at Long Beach last year.
The field includes five previous Long Beach winners beyond Kirkwood. Andretti Global's Will Power claimed victories in 2008 and 2012, while Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon won in 2015 and 2024. ECR's Alexander Rossi captured back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019, and Team Penske's Josef Newgarden took the checkered flag in 2022.
Dixon represents another compelling storyline this weekend, as his next victory would be the 60th of his illustrious career. Only A.J. Foyt has reached that milestone, finishing with 67 wins.
Team Penske newcomer David Malukas occupies fourth in the standings and could earn his first series victory. Teammate Scott McLaughlin and Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward also figure as potential race winners, with O'Ward bringing three street circuit wins to his resume.
Long Beach has served as a cornerstone event since hosting its first street race in 1984, consistently delivering fierce competition on one of the series' most challenging circuits.
The weekend begins with Friday's opening practice session at 6 p.m. ET on FS1. Qualifying for the NTT P1 Award takes place Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET on FS1, with Sunday's 85-lap race scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
