Hamlin Lands 50th Career Pole at Michigan, Then Starts Last

Denny Hamlin edged Michigan native Carson Hocevar for his 50th career Cup pole, then drew a rear-of-field penalty after practice damage and unapproved repairs — handing Hocevar the lead at his home race.

Key Takeaways

  • 1."I remember Richmond, way back in '06 or so, '07, and trying to get a pole at my home track.
  • 2.Tyler Reddick, the championship leader, qualified third and lines up as the highest-placed title contender once Hamlin's penalty is applied.
  • 3.But hats off to this whole team," Hamlin said, praising the crew that salvaged the car.

Denny Hamlin produced the fastest lap of Cup qualifying at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday — and then learned he would start nowhere near the front of it.

Hamlin's 195.117 mph lap, a 36.901-second effort, edged Carson Hocevar by 0.018s to claim pole, the 50th of his career. The milestone moved him past Hall of Famer Bobby Isaac into 10th on NASCAR's all-time pole list. But a flat tyre in practice had already undone the achievement before qualifying began. Hamlin drove the damaged car back to pit lane after NASCAR declined to assist, and the resulting underbody repairs were deemed unapproved — a violation that drops him to the rear for Sunday's FireKeepers Casino 400, even though he keeps credit for the pole.

"It was a handful. It was all I wanted, certainly. But hats off to this whole team," Hamlin said, praising the crew that salvaged the car. "They did a really great job, accounting for the damage on the bottom side. They re-balanced it, and it felt like they did a really good job."

He was unbothered by the prospect of charging from the back. "The race is long, and you can certainly do it. It's not unachievable," Hamlin said, while conceding the comeback "is going to be a challenge in itself, certainly at this racetrack."

The bigger story for the Michigan crowd was who inherits the lead. Carson Hocevar, a Michigan native, will guide the field to the green flag despite officially qualifying second — a bittersweet outcome at his home race, and one that cast Hamlin as the weekend's villain for denying the hometown driver. Hocevar took the near-miss as encouragement.

"I would have loved to have gotten pole there, but third in the Truck race, second in Cup qualifying, so hopefully that's just a trend there," he said, adding that track position will be everything: "Starting up front is going to be super important."

Toyota has now taken every Michigan pole since the Next Gen car arrived in 2022, and the marque again filled the front of the grid. Tyler Reddick, the championship leader, qualified third and lines up as the highest-placed title contender once Hamlin's penalty is applied. Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe completed the top five.

Hamlin arrives at Michigan off a win at Nashville, where he also overcame starting trouble. Repeating that on a fast two-mile oval, from the very back of a 38-car field, is a taller order — but it leaves Sunday's race wide open, with the official pole-sitter watching the man beside him lead the field away.
