Carlos Sainz, currently driving for Ferrari, is set to make a notable shift in his racing career by joining Williams Racing in 2025. The announcement, made by Williams on Monday, brings months of speculation regarding Sainz's future to an end.
This multi-year deal ensures that Sainz will pair up with Alex Albon for the 2025 racing season. In a statement released during the announcement, Williams expressed excitement over the forthcoming team configuration: "Carlos will race at the team for '25, '26 and beyond," which highlights the commitment behind this significant move.
Logan Sargeant, the American driver, will make way for Sainz at the end of the current F1 season. It now appears unlikely that Sargeant will have an opportunity to continue in Formula 1 moving forward.
As Ferrari prepares to bring in Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton for the next season, Sainz's future had looked uncertain for some time. However, Sainz expressed his enthusiasm for the transition, stating, "I am very happy to announce that I will be joining Williams Racing from 2025 onwards. It is no secret that this year's driver market has been exceptionally complex for various reasons and that it has taken me some time to announce my decision."
He continued, "However, I am fully confident that Williams is the right place for me to continue my F1 journey and I am extremely proud of joining such a historic and successful team, where many of my childhood heroes drove in the past and made their mark on our sport."
Sainz is not only a talented driver but also a seasoned competitor, having secured three Grand Prix wins, including this year's Australian Grand Prix. His commitment to the team is clear as he aims to restore Williams to its former glory: "The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to where it belongs, at the front of the grid, is a challenge that I embrace with excitement and positivity. I am convinced that this team has all the right ingredients to make history again and starting on Jan. 1 I will give my absolute best to drive Williams forward alongside every single member of the team."
Williams team principal James Vowles hailed Sainz's signing as a significant leap for the team and a testament to their ambitions. "Carlos joining Williams is a strong statement of intent from both parties," Vowles stated. "Carlos has demonstrated time and again that he is one of the most talented drivers on the grid, with race-winning pedigree, and this underlines the upwards trajectory we are on."
Vowles believes the combination of Sainz and Albon will yield substantial benefits for the team moving forward, asserting, "In Alex and Carlos we will have one of the most formidable driver line-ups on the grid and with huge experience to guide us into the new regulations in 2026."
He also emphasized the commitment the organization has to returning to competitive racing, declaring, "Their belief in this organisation's mission demonstrates the magnitude of the work going on behind the scenes. People should be in no doubt about our ambition and momentum as we continue our journey back to competitiveness — we are here, we are serious and with Dorilton's backing, we are investing in what it takes to return to the front of the grid."
However, Vowles took a moment to acknowledge Sargeant's contributions to the team, saying, "I also want to thank Logan for everything he has done for the team and know he will continue to fight hard for us in the races ahead."
The significant move marks a new chapter for Sainz in his F1 career and sets Williams on what they hope will be a transformative path as they aim to return to their former competitive stature in the sport.
