Marco Bezzecchi completed a fairytale home weekend at Mugello, fighting his way back to the front in the closing laps to win the 2026 MotoGP Italian Grand Prix in front of his adoring Italian fans.
The Aprilia rider converted pole position into an early lead, but the race quickly became a chess match. Pecco Bagnaia, roared on by the Tuscan grandstands, muscled his way to the front and led through the long blast down to San Donato, looking for a moment as though he might author a home win of his own. Bezzecchi bided his time, managing his pace and his tyres before pouncing.
With around 10 laps to go, Bezzecchi made his move stick, slicing back into the lead and immediately beginning to edge clear. Bagnaia tried to tough it out on the brakes but had no answer, and the Ducati man ultimately faded out of the leading fight. Behind, Jorge Martin wound up the second factory Aprilia to shadow his team-mate home and seal a one-two for the Noale marque — a result that backed up Raul Fernandez's victory in Saturday's sprint and confirmed Aprilia as the package to beat.
The scrap for the final place on the podium proved every bit as gripping as the battle for the win. Ai Ogura and Fabio Di Giannantonio went toe to toe through the final laps, the pair snaking left and right under braking as they each tried to squeeze out the last hundredth, Ogura closing the door firmly at one point as bodywork brushed bodywork.
Further back, Pedro Acosta and Marc Marquez served up their own private duel. The two have history this season after close combat at earlier rounds, and they renewed hostilities at Mugello, Acosta repeatedly diving up the inside and forcing Marquez wide. Marquez slipped as low as sixth before clawing his way back to fourth, while Acosta wrestled his factory KTM in the thick of the midfield fight.
For Bezzecchi, though, the day belonged to him alone. A home winner at one of the sport's most atmospheric circuits, he underlined his status as the man of the moment and tightened his grip on a championship that is increasingly bending to Aprilia's will. It was, as the trackside commentary put it, proof that dreams really do come true.
